Who I Am

I come from Jupiter- not a planet but a town, minutes from the Atlantic, directly in between Orlando and Miami. Palm Beach is notorious for retirees that spend their Lily Pulitzer days sporting an I'm-better-than-you attitude at the Polo club with other socialites. Those that don't fall into that majority are typical beach bums, incredibly genuine but completely complacent. During the winter, the NY snowbirds come down and they can be blunt but I prefer their brutal honesty over a fake charade. I am not so cynical that I have boiled Jupiter down to two categories. I do love my hometown and there are exceptional people I met there that are the outliers in this scenario. Nevertheless, I felt a strong desire to escape and experience something different. Before my two years at a Florida state college, I planned to study Music Industry at the University of Southern California. I am eager for the challenge of living in an entirely new city, in a state I've never visited. My entire life I've been very close to my mother, in fact we actually share the same birthday- May 22nd. Moving far from her has been tough. However, she moved from Omaha to Miami when she was 21, so she relates. Despite our similarities, her motive was to get away from the small-town and restrictions. My motive is the passion for music I've had ever since I was a child. When I graduated from high school I took a year off from college to realign and ensure that I really wanted to pursue a career in the cut-throat, fast-paced, semi-sexist, billion dollar music industry. It's something that one has to truly dedicate their life to. I do have supportive mother who always told me to chase my dreams rather than a paycheck, but everything that has led me to this point has been my choice. A professional role model of mine is Elon Musk. He is an incredible businessman with concepts that help the environment and humanity. As a performer: BeyoncĂ© She came from a background where she was taught looks over opinion. In rebellion to this message, her music empowers women of all ages and transforms as she grows. She is an artist that is constantly trying to improve her craft by always pushing herself to give more to her fans and not settling with her old hits. Other people I look up to are entertainers, activists, writers and business gurus such as Michael Jackson, Edith Eva Eger, Robin Williams, David Foster Wallace, and Richard Branson.I feel the best animal to capture my spirit is a tiger. Tigers represent passion, independence, confidence, and focus. Their stripes make them unique. As for nature, a fond memory I have is sitting on my grandma's back patio coloring and being surrounded by all of her potted plants. I also enjoy hearing the sound of rain hit the leaves of trees and the cool change of the weather that the rain brought.

  1. Hey Jessica,
I have to say that I really like the way you begin your essay(post?). I think you've talked about your hometown, but my memory is too bad to remember it, but after read this, there's no way to forget it.Those words you use to describe seasons of your hometown is also pretty impressed. It's so cool!
I also been touched by your experience about chose music industry. Actually, my mom also told me same thing like “dream is more important than money”,and she always encouraged me to do something I really like. Actually, there are so many things we can talk about music industry, and I hope we can share some cool ideas during this semester and in the future(I guess we will have a lot of same classes).

  2. It was so interesting to read about your hometown-Jupiter because you visualized things going on there perfectly. I'm sure pursuing the music industry as a career goal is tough and really respect the time and efforts you spent on making this decision.

  3. I immediately liked your opening statement because it made me do a double take and pay more attention to the rest of your article. I also think that you already write in the way you would speak to some extent and it's sounds very natural!

  5. Hey Jessica!

Great intro I was like omg she is about to talk about space music, but then you swung it back to your hometown and your view of where you was raised. Additionally, I love the relationship and similarities that you draw from your mom. Nice choice of the Tiger "It Grrrrrrrrrrrreat!" i think it really captures the qualities you will need when you are successful in the music industry.

  6. Moving from one coast to another is got to be one of the hardest things anyone can do but you seem to look at the glass half full and that is amazing. You seem to have a lot of your mom's independence in you and that is a great quality to have. Most people do not move onto new and exciting opportunities because of the fear of change, but you are going to have the best experiences because you don't let that get in your way of your dreams. Good luck and have fun!!
