Growing a Farmer Pt 2
Growing a Farmer Analysis Pt. 2
In the first chunk of the book, Kurt supplied us with the structure of maintaining a farm. He gave the reader the rundown of all things dairy and the process of living off the land. He laid down the foundation, or rather soil, so that later in the book he could plant a seed in the reader's mind. Oh those farmers!
Personal Preference Alert!
I did not necessarily enjoy the first few chapters because it felt a little like a pastor in a church telling me how he lives his life and how much better he is for it- reassuring me that I don't have to do the same, all the while his eyes of judgement filling me with conviction.
Also, my grandparents own a Dairy farm somewhere in the middle of Missouri and well it seemed that exactly to me, misery. It most certainly isn't always such a uniting experience of man with nature. While I have a great admiration for what Kurt did as a restauranteer from the city, I don't believe it is as easy of a process.
Saving the Best for Last
It truly all came together for me when he started tying everything back to his personal journey. I loved hearing of his transition from Modern city dweller to a man driven by nature and deeper connection to the roots that we all started from. I realized that i was being hard headed and Kurt had this point of view throughout the whole book. He was not trying to sell me the farmer life, in fact he went into excruciating detail on how difficult it was to transition his taste buds from proceeced bacon and butter to the real stuff. He just discovered a different way to love food.
Reflections
Farmers get a bad rep. They seem disconnected and rual, but honestly they are just misunderstood. Though we all carry a device in our pocket that connects us to billions of other people how many can say that they are part of a true community? To be dependent on one another and work as a team to support a community, isnt that true humanity? Farmers develop a connection to nature, both land and other creatures, and experience a sense of unity and belonging all of us on the internet secretly crave.
